Two Warders of Phulbani district jail were suspended on Wednesday in connection with the death of an under-trial prisoner (UTP), who was attacked by another inmate in the jail premises on December 1.

The suspended Warders were identified as Mahendra Dalei and Laxman Behera. Southern Range DIG (Prisons) Raghunath Majhi issued the suspension order on Tuesday.

Phulbani Jail Superintendent Gariba Sahu said the DIG suspended both the officials for negligence of duty in connection with the incident.

An UTP identified as Laxman Nayak of Tummudibandh had died after being attacked by a fellow inmate, Kanhu Charan Pradhan, at the jail on Sunday morning.

Kanhu, who is serving a life sentence in the jail, allegedly hit Laxman with a stone on his head.  Laxman was immediately rushed to Phulbani hospital in a critical condition and later shifted to the Brahmapur MKCG Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
