Acting swift in the case of the judicial officer's mysterious murder, Baleswar police arrested two persons on Sunday. After interrogation, they are likely to be forwarded to court on Monday under Sections 302 and 120(b) of the IPC.
The arrested persons were identified as Jyoti Ranjan Mohanty (39), and his younger brother Priyaranjan Mohanty (32). While Jyoti is a clerk in the Nayagarh court, Priya is an employee of the Bhusan Steel plant in Dhenkanal district.
Notably, the diseased Anupama Behera, a Process Inspector, was found dead in her service quarters on Friday. A pillow found over her face suggested that it was a case of strangulation.
Superintendent of Police Amrita Dash in a Press brief on Sunday confirmed about the arrest of the duo. She attributed the murder to extramarital relationship.
She said “Behera and Jyoti had extramarital relationship which was causing severe disturbances in the latter’s family. In order to restore the family peace, Jyoti’s younger brother Priya committed the crime.”
Although Behera had married to physician Sukanta Jena in 2009 yet they had strained marital relationship. Taking advantage of their marital discord, Jyoti had advanced intimacy when both were serving in Ranapur. Behera and Jyoti even got married in 2010 in Bhadrakali temple of Bhadrak district, she informed.
“On the day of the incident, Priya had returned home from Dhenkanal with an intention to kill Behera as per instruction of his elder brother. He landed at her official quarters in the evening. Both had dinner together. later, between 4 am and 5.30 am, the accused attacked the victim with a kitchen knife after overpowering her. Then he throttled her to death and after committing the crime left for Angul,” the SP informed, adding while the plan of the murder was made by Jyoti, it was executed by Priya.
