2 die, many hurt as canal embankment slides

Published on:

Two persons were killed and three others critically injured in a massive landslide on the embankment of the Taladanda Canal near Chhatra Bazaar here on Wednesday evening.

Notably, massive earthworks are now underway on both embankments of the canal as part of the beautification and development of the canal road.

However, an old bridge constructed during the British regime close to the landslide stands intact without any damage.

According to eyewitnesses, four to five vegetable vendors on the embankment fell down along the landslide into the canal. They were rescued by locals. Some labourers engaged in construction might have been trapped under the debris. A massive rescue operation was in full swing at the spot.

Among the rescued vegetable vendors, one in critical condition died while being shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital. The conditions of other rescued persons could not be immediately ascertained. Fire brigade and police personnel carried out the rescue
operation.
