As many as 17 prisoners will be released from different jails of the State under a special scheme on the Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 this year.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik informed this in the State Assembly in responsive to a question of Congress MLA Naba Kishore Das on Monday.
In the first phase, a State-level committee formed on the basis of Central guidelines has recommended for release of 17 prisons staying in different jails. Second phase process would begin on Januay 1, 2019 to release prisoners on the Dandi Yatra on April 6, 2019, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.
