Before taking up the drought and farmer suicide issues in the Winter Session of the Assembly from Tuesday, the BJP on Monday met Governor SC Jamir and informed him that at least 151 hapless farmers have committed suicides due to crop loss and debt burden in last three months in the State.

The delegation led by party Krushak Morcha secretary Maheswar Sahoo submitted a 12-point charter of demand on drought situation to the Governor and sought his intervention in the matter.

“We apprised the Governor about the poor state of affairs of the farmers’ community in the State and informed him that as many as 151 farmers gave committed suicide in last three months. We urge the Governor for early compensation to drought-hit farmers, assessment of crop loss, repair of defunct lift irrigation (lI) points and rescheduling of loan repayment,” said Sahoo.

Alleging State Government’s failure to tackle the disaster, the delegation demanded Governor’s intervention into the matter to provide relief to the distressed peasants.
