Although it has been more than 15 days since Debshankar Das, an IIT Kharagpur student and a resident of Harinabari villageunder Sagar police station in South Pragana district of West Bengal, was physically assaulted by traffic police personnel and also by Singhadwar police station officials, after he was roughed up by some miscreants in Puri, no action has been taken against the culprits till date.
According to sources, Das had come to Puri on June 2 for Jagannath darshan when the incident happened with him. “When I was going to the Goudia Mutt in a rickshaw, a few unidentified miscreants misbehaved with me on the way. When I opposed it, they beat me. I drew the attention of the traffic police officials present at the site at that time about the incident. Instead of protecting me, the police personnel too beat me,”
alleged Das.
later, Das came to the Singhadwar police station to lodge a complaint.
But the police
officials allegedly beat him instead of registering his
complaint.
Sources said Das had tried to contact the district SP, Home Secretary and Chief Secretary over phone to seek justice but in vain. Decrying the inaction and inordinate delay in registering the FIR, Das had written letters to the Odisha Governor, Chief Minister and State Human Rights Commission but no action has been taken on the complaint, sources said.
“I urged the State administration to take exemplary action against the culprits and the police personnel who were involved in the crime,”
said Das.
