In yet another major drugs seizure, the Baleswar police on Wednesday, following a tipoff, conducted a raid, seized brown sugar weighing about 1.2 kg,  worth nearly Rs 1.2 crore and arrested the kingpin.

The accused was identified as Sanwar Biwi (40), a resident of Masjid lane, Aradbazar, under Sahadevkhunta police limits.

According to Sahadevkhunta police station IIC Pragyan Mohanty, the accused was intercepted near to her house with the contraband.

The consignment had come from Kolkata through a syndicate network. The accused had not revealed the name who delivered her the contraband.

The accused was booked under the NDPS Act and forwarded to court, informed Mohanty.

“On different occasions, she was arrested by police as well as the excise department sleuths in 2013 and 2014 too. Efforts are on to unearth the network,” the IIC added.

Notably, brown sugar weighing 930 gm worth about about Rs 93 lakh had been sized by the Excise department’s central vigilance wing on May 28 last.

Sk Rafique (28), a resident of Aradbazar under Sahadevkhunta police limits, was arrested in that raid.

In fact, Baleswar while has turned a drugs hub, Aradbazar, Purnabaleswar, Barabati and ITI square area  have become haven for the peddlers  as well as the addicts.

“Baleswar had come in the map of narcotics and drugs as a hub ever since drugs lord Azad Parvez operated through a network. Although he was arrested and put behind the bars, yet the business went unabated. The business and transactions can’t run in Baleswar without the support, either active or passive of the enforcement agencies.  In the town itself, not only drugs, but also illegal liquor selling counters are opening in large numbers. Both the police as well as the Excise officials are in connivance with the mafias,” said a social activist.
