12 hundis to be installed on lords' chariots

Imposing restriction on collection of offerings and donations by sevayats from devotees during the Rath Yatra in Puri this year, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) on Monday decided to instal hundis (donation boxes) on the chariots of lord Jagannath and his siblings.

“The temple servitors have been asked not to receive donation from pilgrims and devotees while being on chariots during the Rath Yatra. The temple administration will instal a total of 12 Hundis on the three chariots, in which the devotees can drop their donations,” said SJTA Chief Administrator Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra.

This apart, six Hundis would be installed at the Gundicha Temple by the SJTA during the stay of the deities at that shrine.

Notably, the Supreme Court recently directed the Jagannath Temple administration to “ensure that no direct collection of the offerings is made by any Sevaks and all the offerings either in Hundi or are deposited and accounted for and properly utilised.”
