The All Odisha Roadside Vendors’ Association (AORVA) has threatened to stage a State-wide agitation if the State Government doesn’t rehabilitate 10,000 roadside vendors, who have been evicted from along Konark-Puri and Bhubaneswar-Puri roads in view of Nabakalebar festival.“The State Government has forgotten to implement the constitutional rights of the people and a Supreme Court order vis-à-vis eviction of roadside vendors. While the National Roadside Vendors Act states that roadside vendors should be given identity cards and rehabilitated at vending zones, the Puri Municipality and the Puri-Konark Development Authority have illegally evicted around 10,000 vendors from along roads connecting Puri and in the sea beach area. Now, they are spending very miserable lives and their children are facing difficulties to pursue studies. In view of this, they need to be rehabilitated soon,” said AORVA president Pratap Kumar Sahoo. He said the AORVA would be forced to take to the street if the Government does not fulfill its demands soon.
