The success in identifying and arrest of the accused in the case of Salia Sahi rape and murder of a minor girl from the footage of CCTV of a private individual has prompted the city Police Commissionerate to install advanced close circuit cameras at sensitive places in the city in a phased manner.
As many as 103 modern CCTV cameras would be installed in first phase at select places by the end the December. The tendering process has been completed for procurement of the cameras at a cost of `12 crore, sources said.
The CCTVs would be installed under the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System project. In the first phase, the cameras would be installed near the State Secretariat, State Assembly, Rabindra Mandap, Reserve Bank of India, lower PMG, Master Canteen Square, AG Square, Raj Bhavan Square, Kalpana Square, Rajmahal Square, Airport Square and Units-I and II market building areas.
For the transmission and monitoring of footage of the CCTV cameras, a state-of-the-art monitoring centre would be set up at the Police Commissionerate building for surveillance of the footages round-the-clock.
In the second phase, the cameras would be installed on the National Highways running through the city and other important places. At present, the CCTNS is being in operation in two districts, Angul and Kendrapada.
Official sources said the project envisages automation of all the 581 police stations in the State, 111 SDPOs and ACP offices, 36 SP offices, 37 Control Rooms, eight Police Range offices and the State police headquarters in Cuttack.
