10,14,985 doses produced in Cuttack bovine semen bank

Published on:

The Frozen Semen Bank (FSB), Cuttack, produced 10,14,985 doses of frozen semen, which is 13 per cent higher than the production attained during 2014-15.

The FSB, which has the maximum capacity to produce 10 lakh straws in a year, has been able to achieve more, thanks to determined efforts of the team FSB.

FARD Secretary and Odisha livestock Resources Development Society (OlRDS) President Bishnupada Sethi congratulated all the staff of the FSB and OlRDS for full capacity utilization.

Further, the FSB had taken adequate steps to procure 4,07,233 frozen semen straws from outside State i.e, from National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Andhra Pradesh livestock Development Agency (APlDA) to meet the requirement of State.

The FSB, which has been rated Grade ‘A’, plays a significant role to produce frozen semen straw to be used for genetic up-gradation of bovine population. The objective of the FSB is to produce quality semen to cater to the needs of our State.

At present, the FSB has 71 bulls including 10 pure Jerseys, 28 cross breed, 15 Hariana and 18 Red Sindhi donor bulls.

Artificial insemination by using frozen semen technology is being extensively used for genetic upgradation of indigenous cattle throughout the country. Dissemination of superior milk production traits is the key for productive enhancement of the dairy animal.

Crossing local female cattle with superior semen by artificial insemination (AI) and cross-breeding has been taken up on a large scale and at a comparatively low cost.

The semen with living sperms collected from the donor bulls is processed and packaged in single dose plastic straws and stored in frozen state for future use.

The long-term preservation of semen by deep-freezing allows considerable flexibility in arrangements for the supply of semen. Freezing also permits a more efficient use of the semen.

The frozen semen after thawing is introduced into female reproductive tract at proper time with the help of instruments. In order to ensure better conception rate, fertility and genetic progress, quality of the frozen semen is important.
