1,000 held in a month in Ganjam dist

Though the drive to make Ganjam crime free by SP Asish Singh is yielding good results, yet some anti-socials are active and have not given up their routine operations.

A failed robbery bid at the house of a city-based business man in Gandhinagar 3rd line Extension on Tuesday late night proves it.

The miscreants loiter in Gandhinagar 3rd line extension (back side of the Roland College) as the area is dark and mostly senior citizens move around there.  They commit all kinds of crime from stanching to robbery as the city police never visit the area.

According to information available, in last month (March 22 to April 22), the Ganjam police have reportedly arrested more than 1,000 suspected to have anti-social and criminal background from Brahmapur and different parts of Ganjam district and sent them to jail. The arrested persons include 195 hardcore criminals, 256 liquor mafias and 763 warrantees. Sources also suggest that, the police have made an appeal before the court to apply Sections 110 against 131 accused persons to make the crime detection drive more stringent.

In addition to these arrests, the police have also seized 32 mousers. Besides, the police also kept a tab on law breakers to ensure a smoother vehicular traffic. To control erratic and illegal driving, the police have deployed additional forces in different strategic places of the city like Gandhinagar square to check registration documents of the vehicles, speed driving, use of cell phone while driving, driving with three persons and imposed huge fine on the law breakers.

Meanwhile, the mounting number of arrests, on the other hand, has become the headache for the Brahmapur jail authorities, sources said. According to information available, there are currently 800 under trial prisoners accommodated in the Brahmapur Jail alone, as against the capacity of 757.

Some of the accused persons who were released from the jail on bail alleged that the prisoners are instructed to use limited water even though there are five tube wells inside the jail meant for the under trials. The jail authorities, however, described the allegation baseless.

SP Singh said that the drive would continue in both the police districts. “We are conducting a separate inquiry into procurement of firearms by anti-socials as a number of unlicenced and country-made guns were found from them,” he added.
