Nearly 100 students fell sick after consuming midday meal at the Kendupali Upper Primary School under Birmaharajpur block in Subarnapur district on Saturday.
They were admitted to the Biramaharajpur health centre. “Only six students, whose conditions are critical, were given medication. Others are stated to be out of danger and will be discharged soon,” doctors said.
The students complained of nausea and stomach ache soon after taking the meal. The teachers took the matter lightly and fed them with antacid tablets. However, no sign of improvement was seen even after they were administered preliminary treatment. They were later taken to the nearest hospital by ambulances.
Palpable tension gripped the school over the incident after guardians locked the teachers for a while alleging negligence on their part.
The Sub-Collector and police reached the school and took stock of the situation. The Sub-Collector also visited the students at the hospital.
The food samples were collected for examination to ascertain the cause of such an incident, the Sub-Collector said.
