‘Visit OPGC ash pond, report soon’

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Jharsuguda district Collector and the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) to inspect an ash pond being constructed by the Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) at Sansaratikra village in Jharsuguda district.

Based on a petition filed by Maa Ambika Self Help Group, the NGT has also directed the administration to submit a report after a spot visit before the next hearing.

The NGT reprimanded the OPGC and the district administration for overlooking allegations of villagers.

The SHG alleged that ash pond is being constructed within 20 metres from Sansaratikra village against the norm of 48 metres from a human habitation. This apart, the ash pond will pose threat to the nearby Hirakud reservoir. No public hearing was held before land acquisition for the pond, the petition stated.

Meanwhile, the State Pollution Control Board Chairman has said that it would visit soon.
