The BJP Krushak Morcha, Kandhamal unit on Thursday demanded that the State Government open mandis and procure turmeric, which is hugely produced in Kandhamal district, at Rs 150 per kg soon instead of present price of Rs 120.
“The KALIA programme will be of no help to farmers of the Kandhamal district. The Government should procure turmeric at Rs 150 per kg from Kandhamal farmers soon,” demanded Morcha district president Abaneswar Pradhan at a Press meet held here on Thursday.
He slammed the State Government for not providing bonus of Rs 100 on a quintal of paddy and admitting farmers committing suicides due to loan burden and crop loss.
He threatened that it would gherao the Naveen Niwas on January 8 if the demand is not met by then. Among others, Morcha secretary Bhagaban Mohanty, State executive member Kamala Kanta Pandey and leader Tapan Padhi were present.
