‘OPSC can’t recruit varsity teachers legally’

The Ravenshaw Bikash Abhijan has submitted a memorandum to the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) Chairman urging him not to accept the ‘illegal’ power entrusted to it by the State Government for recruitment of university teachers and make the Government know about the law in this regard.

It may be noted that the State Government, by virtue of the University Amendment Bill 2020, has advised authorities of all universities to give proposals to the OPSC for making recruitment against vacancies lying with them.

“As per Article 320 of the Constitution, OPSC is empowered to make recruitment of Government servants but no university teachers. But the State Government has forcibly entrusted the power of recruitment of university teachers to the OPSC.

The Government has taken this initiative in a haste during Covid-19 pandemic to take away autonomy of the universities. The Government should refrain from these illegality,” demanded Abhijan functionaries.

They too threatened that the Ravenshaw Bikash Abhiyan, if needed, would take to the streets to grab people’s support against the law and file public interest litigation.

Abhiyan president Chittaranjan Mohanty, Satya Ray, Prashant Das, CV Shashtri, Bijay Routray, Bishwabasu Das, Khirod Mohapatra, Dali Das, Khageshwar Sethi and secretary Siddhartah RAth were present.
