Eminent scientists on Sunday called for meaningful research in understanding, preventing and managing of different types of cancer through application of advanced knowledge in the field of medical biotechnology, molecular biology and personalised medicine.
More than 20 experts in the field of research participated in a two-day national conference on “Cancer Biology and Therapy” at the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar. The conference had participation of over 250 researchers and students from all over the country.
The prominent speakers included Dr Radhakrishna Pillai, Director, RGCB, Prof Subrata Acharya, President, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Dr Tapas Kundu, Director, CDRI, Dr Gopal Kundu, Director, NCCS, and Prof Sujata Mohanty, AIIMS, New Delhi. They detailed out several new developments made in the area of cancer detection, therapy, treatment and management of breast, oral, pancreatic, gallbladder, lung and liver cancer.
It was pointed out that the progress made in the area using genomics, and genetics approach has led to identification of several lead molecules those could be used in single or combinational therapies for managing the dreaded disease.
Three cancer survivors and NGO UMMEID working on patient care stressed the need for a more humane approach in dealing with people affected with this dreaded disease and appealed for creating awareness, regular screening and for affordable cost of cancer treatment.
ILS Director Dr Ajay Parida, in his opening remark, provided the research work in cancer biology being carried out at the ILS in partnership with several cancer hospitals in Odisha and hoped that the research findings would lead to development of diagnostics and therapeutic solutions.
Priya Singh received the Best Presentation Award at the conference.
