‘Mother Nature is humans’ only saviour’

The wonderful living world in the form of diverse species of animals, plants and microbes is the experimental creation of Mother Nature. All the needs of the living organisms are met by nature in the form of numerous goods and services. However, human beings of the modern era have brought about massive destruction of natural ecosystems and impaired their sustainability by way of diverse detrimental activities.

Time has come when we need to recognise that a healthy planet is essential for our social and economic progress and resilience. We have to reset our relationship and live in harmony with nature. In a recent convention of the United Nations ‘Stolkholm+50’ in Sweden, emphasis was laid on ‘a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility and our opportunity’.

Experts expressed such views while participating in a webinar on the theme “Mother Nature as the Saviour” organised by the Orissa Environmental Society (OES) here.

Chief guest Dr V Santhosh Kumar, Professor of Pharmacology and founder-chief, Elephant Research Centre, VELS University, Tamil Nadu, narrated how emphasis has been laid in the ‘2050 Vision for Biodiversity’ to live in harmony with nature, halt and reverse biodiversity loss, conserve and restore ecosystems and act resolutely for the implementation of befitting measures.

Chairing the programme, OES president DrSundara Narayan Patro said the moral responsibility of the human beings is to pay utmost importance to the conservation of natural wealth for the future generations. In his welcome address, OES secretary DrJayakrushnaPanigrahi explained how an apathetic attitude towards nature and other living organisms is on the rise in the course of advancement of human civilisation, resulting in loss of natural balance and extinction of many species.
