‘Monsoon to reach Odisha in a week’

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday predicted that the southwest monsoon would reach Odisha within a week.

Now, several parts of the State are experiencing pre-monsoon rains, informed a senior official of Regional Meteorological Centre here.

“The conditions are now favourable for advancement of the south-west monsoon towards Odisha. The State is likely to witness the onset of monsoon within a week,” Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre HR Biswas said.

While the monsoon’s Arabian Sea branch supports the advancement of the Bay of Bengal branch, Cyclone Vayu had weakened the approach of monsoon towards other parts of the country, he informed.

Noting that a low-pressure area is likely to build over the north Bay of Bengal in next few days, Biswas said the system would help in advancement of the monsoon.

Some parts of Odisha are now experiencing rains and thunderstorms, which are likely to continue for the next two days, a MeT official said.

However, the heat wave conditions continued in some parts of the western region on Sunday.

Jharsuguda recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degree Celsius, Sambalpur 40.2 and Balangir 41.2 and southern Malkangiri 40 degree.
