‘High positivity in 3 Odisha districts causes concern’

Three districts in the State still report high positivity rate (TPR) over the last week, for which Central Government has expressed its concern. The districts of Baleswar, Dhenkanal and Nuapada have registered a weekly positivity rate of more than 10per cent for week ending on July 4. “It is a point of concern that presently, three districts of Odisha are reporting weekly positivity rate of more than 10per cent between June 28 and July 4,” wrote Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan to State Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra on Tuesday.Though, the State’s positivity rate is consistently declining and stands at 5.36per cent between June 28 and July 4, Nuapada district has shown a significant TPR over the last week. The Union Health Secretary’s letter stated that although the cases have shown continuous decline since past four weeks in Odisha, five  districts, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Baleswar, have reported an increase in the week ending on July 4 as compared to previous week. The Union Ministry also expressed its concern over the increase in the number Covid deaths reported by the State Government over the past two weeks. While Khordha district reported 58 deaths, the highest in the State, over the last week, the number of fatalities was 309 in the State during the same period. Even as the State has a low CFR (Case Fatality Rate) of less than 0.46per cent, the continuous monitoring of daily new deaths needs to be done, the Union Health Secretary suggested.
