‘GPCDA has made Mahuda Pharma College a biz centre’

Published on:

Various organisations under the banner of the Mahuda Pharmacy College Banchao Milita Manch has submitted a memorandum to the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (Southern) demanding early freeing of the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Brahmapur, Mahuda from the clutches of the “corrupt” ‘Ganjam Phulbani Chemists’ and Druggists’ Association (GPCDA) and steps for takeover of the college by the State Government.

“The College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Brahmapur has become .a business centre and source of income of the GPCDA since it took over the charge of the institution, which was established with funds from the then Brahmapur Municipality and is now running with students’ tuition fees,” read the memorandum.

Abani Kumar Gaya and Maguni Nahak of the Manav Adhikar Suraksha Manch, Rajendra Kumar Panda, Siva Prasad Mishra and Shyam Sundar Khadanga of the Ganjam Zilla Bikash Manch, Krushna Charan Panigrahi of the Teacher’ Association, Madhusudan Sethi of Indian Citizen’s Action for Nation and the Lokashakti Abhiyan, Trinath Moharana of the Sanskarabadi and Senior Citizens’ Forum and Surendra Panigrahi of Bharat Bikash Parishad have undersigned the memorandum, among others.

Alleging that GPCDA has shrewdly taken over the management of the premier college of the State established in 1979, the members alleged that the college chairman and GPCDA secretary and other management members in connivance with the Principal have already bungled crores of rupees. Even as the Government had initiated process to take over the college into its fold, some unscrupulous people in the management withdrew the proposal from the Cabinet Committee for their personal gains.

“Nothing is going right in the college. Though huge amounts of fees are being collected by way of tuition fees from the students, no infrastructural development has been done. Whopping expenditure of Rs 80 lakh shown to be incurred for visit of former President APJ Abdul Kalam to the college remains to be a debatable subject,” alleged the members.

The members demanded that all receipts and expenditure of the college since its inception in 1979 be brought under the purview of Government financial audit system and the College chairman and GPCDA secretary, Principal and other errant management members be taken to the task for their corrupt practices. The expenditure of Rs 80 lakh incurred for visit of Kalam should be probed properly. Vigilance case must be initiated against the persons who have grabbed crores of rupees from the college funds.

“We once again request you to take appropriate steps for freeing the college from the clutches of the business-minded and corrupt GPCDA and taking over the college to the Government fold,” demanded the members.
