45 people dead in floods in Gajapati, Ganjam: BJP

The BJP on Sunday reiterated that precious human lives were lost and properties were damaged in different districts during the cyclone and subsequent floods due to sheer negligence of the State Government.

“The State Government didn’t take the IMD warnings seriously. It kept claiming zero casualty.

But lakhs of people are now suffering miserably,” said BJP leaders Bhrugu Baxipatra, Prithviraj Harichandan and Sameer Mohanty at a Press meet here.

Three teams led by Baxipatra, Harichandan and Mohanty had visited the Titli-affected Gajapati, Rayagada and Ganjam districts, respectively.

They demanded that the Special Relief Commissioner tender resignation for failing to discharge his duty properly.

As many as 40 persons died in Gajapati and five in Ganjam. No relief had reached Gangabada GP in Gajapati district by Friday evening, they alleged.

They too alleged that there is no truth in the State Government’s claim of shifting 49,000 people to safer places in Rangeilunda block of Ganjam district.

Only 20 to 25 five persons were seen in each cyclone shelter, they said.

They demanded that the State Government make a realistic assessment of the damages and provide assistance to the affected people at the earliest.
