‘Govt making lawyers’ issue murkier’

Published on:

Lawyers throughout the State are on strike over last two months, opposing police assault on a colleague. The courts are paralysed and the number of under trial prisoners is rising alarmingly. But the State Government has taken no steps to find a way out to resolve the issue till date, charged PCC president Niranjan Patnaik.

Rather, on the contrary, the Government is making this more complicated by making a fraction through its BJD Lawyers’ Forum, Patnaik told.

Patnaik said both the police and the lawyer play an important role in a democratic system and their issues must be addressed on priority basis. Now the police-lawyers issue is sub-judice and the Orissa High Court will deliver its verdict.

But at this crucial juncture, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is not taking it seriously and 25 platoons of police force have been deployed in the High Court area. This is not at all acceptable, Patnaik opined.

He further said courts are not functioning due to lawyers’ strike and litigants are the worst sufferers of the conflict. The Chief Minister must intervene and make a way out for out of court settlement, he demanded.
