The Wild Orissa' has opposed the very idea of leaving insecure the southern part of the Karlapat Sanctuary while mooting a proposal to declare the sanctuary a Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ).
It objected to the zero extent of ESZ being proposed in the southern part of the protected area for the reasons that out of eight bauxite blocks, three have been assigned to OMECL for exploration purpose of bauxite. Activities like commercial mining, stone quarrying and crushing units, setting of industries causing pollution, establishment of major hydroelectric project, use or production or processing of any hazardous substances, discharge of untreated effluents in natural water bodies or land area, setting up of new saw mills, setting up of brick kilns, use of plastic bags and commercial use of firewood will be permitted right on the southern borders of Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary if there will be no ESZ in southern boundary, which will be highly detrimental for the ecological sanctity of the whole sanctuary, it said.
