‘Don’t allow minors to drive’

The State Transport Authority (STA) on Monday said it would penalise parents of the minor children who are caught driving two-wheelers.

The move is aimed at curbing the growing menace of underage driving and checking road mishaps. Action would be taken against the violators under Section 19A of the MV Act.

“Special enforcement drive to check school students riding vehicles will start from Tuesday across the State. A fine of Rs 25,000 will be imposed if anyone below 18 years is found driving vehicle. The owner of the vehicle or the minor’s parent may also face jail term,” said the Transport (Enforcement) Additional Commissioner.

“Further, violators can't avail licence till they attain 25 years and vehicle owners will be forwarded to court,” the official added.
