‘Diabetics more prone to Covid’

Published on:

Experts have observed that Covid-19 has infected a more number of people with diabetes compared to other people making the battle even tougher for them. “The Covid virus easily infects persons with diabetes and these patients subsequently become critical,” Prof Abhay Kumar Sahu, Head of the department of Endocrinology at Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, said.

He described both Covid and diabetes as two edges of the same sword. Another worrying factor is that the drugs administered to treat Covid in non-diabetic patients often leads to those persons becoming diabetic subsequently, Prof. Sahu said while speaking at a programme organised to mark the World Diabetes Day on Sunday. He said while 11% to 12% of the urban population is found to be diabetic, it is 8% to 15% in those living in rural areas.
