‘Despite rain, no flood threat to State’

Published on:

Even as several rivers have swelled due to incessant rains, the State has not witnessed flood-like situation yet, said Water Resources Department Engineer-in-Chief (EIC) Jyotirmaya Rath on Friday.

The EIC also ruled out the possibility of flood due to the heavy rains being caused due to low-pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal in the last few days.

Rath told reporters that only two rivers are flowing above the danger mark. The water level of the Baitarani river at Akhuapada in Bhadrak district crossed the danger mark 17.83 metre and stood at 17.85 metre on Friday morning. Besides, the Jalaka river has also swollen following heavy rains. Its water level was 6.6 metre against the danger mark of 7.25 metre. However, all other rivers were flowing much below their danger marks.

“People should not fear as all the river embankments in the State are in good condition. The inflow of Hirakud dam was 2.85 lakh cusec and outflow was 2.33 lakh cusec,” he added.

According to Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Sundargarh districts have received an average of 2 to 2.5 inch rainfall in the last 24 hours. Maximum 4.5 inch of rainfall was recorded in parts of some districts.

On Friday 13 districts witnessed light to moderate rainfalls. They are Angul, Baragarh, Bhadrak, Balasore, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj,  Sambalpur districts.
