‘Coop banks now storehouses of corruption’

The BJP on Wednesday accused the State Government of interfering heavily in cooperative institutions resulting in the destruction of the cooperative movement in the State.

The party leaders alleged that because of the evil design of the BJD leaders to occupy the Central Cooperative Bank posts by force and misuse of power, all the 17 district Cooperative Central Banks have become storehouses of corruption.

Addressing a Press conference here, former MLA Pradip Purohit raised the issue of Sundargarh Cooperative Central Bank where controversial CEO Suresh Das despite pending corruption charge against him was reinstated as CEO again.

Purohit alleged that the illegal appointment of Das has raised many an eyebrow as farmers of the district are not getting farm loans and other benefits because of him. There has been allegation of corruption against him as he along with former president of Central Bank Shankar Majhi has bungled Rs 4.56 crore, Purohit said referring to a special audit report in this connection.

And, irinically the department has transferred auditors and bank employees who had drawn attention of the Government to the corruption, he said.

He pointed out that CEO Das was relieved on January 31 and Ranjan Patel replaced him as CEO. However, Das is still claiming as CEO as he has got the patronage of the Minister concerned, Purohit alleged.

He demanded a special audit of all 17 Central Cooperative Banks since December 2019.
