The Manganiyars are Rajasthan’s most famous community who are known for their classical folk music. They are groups of hereditary professional musicians, whose music has been supported by aristocrats for generations. Their songs are passed on from generation to generation as a form of oral history of the desert.
They sang the songs about Alexander the Great, about the local Maharajas and past battles in the region. Story narration in their performance was so spontaneous that the audience could actually picture the events that were narrated through the Rajasthani folk songs. The different musical instruments combined with their energetic voice and puppet shows drew the audience more involved in the performance of the artists.Another performance was given by Swati Daithnakar, a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer. She gave a performance at IISER leaving the audience enthralled.
The pure Bharatnatyam was performed by her on stage giving the students a blur idea about the rich culture and tradition of the country. The speedy footwork, and rhythmical presentation made the audience watch her performance with rapt attention. Her moves were widely appreciated. The show was a hit.
