A workshop on ‘GIS and Universal Accessibility’ was organized at the School of Planning and Architechture (SPA) that concluded here on Thursday.

The workshop began on December 9. The workshop was sponsored by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

The participants discussed how to use this data for making inclusive cities in India. Workshop was coordinated by Kakoli Saha, a GIS expert from SPA.

Notably, geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes. With this unique capability, GIS reveals deeper insights into data, such as patterns, relationships, and situations helping users make smarter decisions.

As many as 20 participants from all over the country attended the workshop.  The workshop provided an introduction to Geographical Information System (GIS) in the field of Universal Accessibility in Indian cities with a case of Bhopal City.

The participants performed Universal Access Audit of selected four road stretches of Bhopal city and generated Universal Access map for those stretches using GIS. During the workshop, the students worked in different groups. After the audit, they creatwd the map. According to the participants such map, if generated and consolidated for a city, can help government bodies and planners to make cities inclusive.
