Roza rakhne walo jag jao sehri ka waqt ho chukka hai (Wake up those who wish to keep fast, it's time for the pre-dawn breakfast). This loud yell from an old man used to awaken the people in the month of Ramzan, the practice though is on the verge of extinction in the changing times, but still at a few places in the dense city areas one could hear the loud yell of awakening for the sehri (an Islamic term referring to the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before fasting begins).
Mostly the one who used to awaken the people for the fasting used to be old men who perform the duty for pious reasons and, of course, for some monetary benefits.
In the changing times the place of the sehri awakeners have been taken by mobile phones, friends and relatives calling on each other in the morning to awaken for fasting. This is considered as pious work as per the Islamic belief.
In modern times there are service providers also who provide this service through net phony. One needs to get registered on their websites with complete details and on the prescribed time one would get the awakening call from the service provider. Moreover, no charges are levied by the service provider for this facility, they do it just for pious reasons.
Back to the old man yelling in the last part of the night to awaken for fasting, in some parts of the walled city of Bhopal one could still come across the loud yell Roza rakhne walo jag jao sehri ka waqt ho chukka hai during Ramzan. The tradition is fast coming to an end as no one among the younger generation is bothered to take on the difficult job of roaming in the streets and yelling to awaken the people, youngsters also feel shy of doing so.
Moreover, the youngsters are more comfortable with the latest techniques and find mobile awakening and net phony services more suitable for the cause.
