Water-logging in several low lying areas in the State capital exposes arrangements

Published on:

Heavy rains in the state capital on Sunday evening created water-logging conditions in many areas, at the start of monsoon making the situation gets worse for commuters and citizens every year.

Congressmen took chance to target administration and BMC as Senior councilor Yogendra Singh Guddu Chauhan and other Congress councilors have raised objections. They said that the cleaning of the drains was to be completed in May itself, but till now half of the drains have not been cleaned.

There are a total of 781 major drains in Bhopal. Only half of the drains have been cleaned in one and a half month. The corporation is getting the rest of the drains cleaned, but the situation has started deteriorating since the rains started. The situation worsened due to rain on Sunday itself. Many areas were flooded and normal life was thrown out of gear.

People continued to get upset due to water filling in the shops at Peepal intersection of Karond. The low-lying settlements of Sant Hirdaram Nagar (Bairagadh) were inundated.

Shopkeepers and customers faced problems due to water-logging in the wholesale grocery Jumerati Market. The slum built near the cremation ground in Ward-55 was flooded up to one feet.

Shops in Ghoda Nakkas area were flooded. Due to non-cleaning of the drain, the Amrai campus was filled with water.

Mayor should immediately call a special session, there should be discussion on cleaning of drains

Councilor Guddu Chauhan said that every year the drains were cleaned before May 15, but this time the drains have not been cleaned yet. The drains have not been cleaned in his own ward till now. On Sunday itself, there was a situation of waterlogging in many areas of the city and people kept getting worried.

The mayor-corporation administration is responsible for waterlogging. The Congress councilor group had written a letter to Mayor Malti Rai on June 21 itself and demanded a special session. Despite this, neither the session was called nor the cleaning of drains was expedited. The Mayor should call a special session soon and discuss the cleaning of drains in all the 85 wards.
