A noted classical vocalist, Ustad Rashid Khan gave a splendid performance before the classical music lovers of the city. He performed at Ravindra Bhavan Auditorium, here on Friday to mark the 67th Independence Day.

Notably, Ustad Rashid Khan received his training from his uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Belonging to Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, Ustad Rashid Khan presented his first live concert at the age of 11 and from then he has never turned back. Ustad Rashid Khan began his performance with Raga Madhuvanti in Vilambit Ek Tala. In Raga Madhumanti he sang two khayals, Bada Khayal and Chhota Khayal. In chhota khayal he sang, ‘Kahe Man Karu Re Sakhi Ab’. He then further performed his compositions before the classical music lovers leaving them mesmerized.

Ustad Rashid Khan has included the slow elaboration in his vilambit khayals in the manner of his maternal uncle and also developed exceptional expertise in the use of sargams and sargam taankari. He has also included the slower tempo vilambit. He is also extremely adept in producing all the other techniques and characteristic features of the Rampur Sahaswan style. His taankari is as powerful and varigeated as any of his predecessors and, in fact, among the best in the nation at the moment.

The innovation he brings into his compositions makes him different from others classical composers. As he began singing, the audiences were awestruck to witness the programme. He wonderfully blended classical tunes into the rhythm of classical taal which was loved by the audience. During the performance, Chairman of Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Corporation (MPSTC) Mohan Yadav and Deputy Chairman MPSTC Santosh Jain were also present on the occasion.
