Vishu is observed on the first day of the Medam month of the Malayalam calendar. It symbolizes the beginning of the spring season.
Lord Krishna is worshipped on Vishu, and his idol is placed on the Vishukkani. This is because; as one of the mythological tales states that it was on this day when Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura.
The inauguration commenced on a beautiful note with a prayer song by one of the students and a lamp-lighting ceremony. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Rajesh Kumar Pasricha (Chairperson; Cultural Committee), Dr. Garima Goel (Member Secretary; Cultural Committee), Dr. Sramana Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Lily Poddar, Kumarasamy and R. Velmurugan.
The event’s main attraction was Vishukkani, an auspicious display traditionally arranged the night before Vishu, and its sighting is believed to herald a prosperous year. The Vishukkani kept consisted of yellow Kanikkonna flowers, betel leaves, coconut, raw rice grains, kasavu dhoti, vaal kannadi (a hand mirror), golden cucumber, coins and currency notes; all placed inside the uruli. A metal Nilavilakku is lit and placed next to the uruli in front of Lord Krishna’s idol.
Later on, the crowd was mesmerized by Thiruvathira, a graceful and well-coordinated traditional dance form of Kerala. This was followed by a group song presented by MBBS and Nursing students, which included songs from different languages of India.
The faculty present also participated in fun games with the students, like musical chairs, where they had a hearty engagement with everyone present. Following the vote of thanks, the event concluded with a serving of delicious Payasam (Kheer), a traditional dessert of Kerala made with coconut milk, paalada, and various delectable ingredients.
