Virus hits ‘cleanest’ Indore hard

With contribution of over 5 per cent to total number of Covid19 positive cases of the country comes as an intriguing example.

Till Thursday, the country has reported over 12,500 positive cases of Covid19 and 707 have been detected only from Indore including 37 deaths. These include 11 persons from other States who have been quarantined in a hotel and administration has added them into the list of positive cases.

The city in last few years has evoked awe and inspiration by emerging as the cleanest city of the country thrice in a row. A disciplined approach towards sanitation practices and self-restraint has won accolades for the city and its denizens from world over.

However, the image has been severely dented after the city contracted corona infection on large scale. The local have repeatedly breached the safety advisories issued by the district administration and on Wednesday, eight suspects kept at Rau quarantine centre under Rajendra Nagar police station had fled the facility.

Till late evening, the police managed to nab three of them while the search for remaining five of them is still on. All of them are said to be natives of Ranipura area who had reportedly slipped from the centre from the back side where a nullah is situated, an officer from Rajendra Nagar police said.

Earlier, a suspect of Tanzim Nagar area had fled the quarantine facility and reached his home. He was later tested positive and his family too had contracted infection after he had met them.

The locals had exhibited their unruly intent when people had ventured out on streets during the janta curfew announced by PM Narendra Modi on March 22. Though the administration later dealt them with police cases but such violations become a regular feature in Indore.

Suspects had misbehaved with doctors in the city and later locals had heckled health team which was carrying out health check in Ranipura area. On April 2, in a major incident, administration team including two women doctors were attacked with stones in Taat Patti Bakhal area under Kshtribagh police station and police later had arrested 13 culprits and booked four of them under National Security Act.

These four were sent to Jabalpur and Satna and later three of them had tested positive for covid19 under custody. Days ago a police constable and a member of Nagar Suraksha Samiti were attacked by locals in Chandan Nagar area as the two were trying to convince locals to retreat to their homes and not roam around in lockdown.

Till the time curfew was clamped in Indore, locals were coming out of homes in large numbers to buy vegetables in crowded mandis despite corona risk.
