The ‘Naya Theatre’ group would present a drama called ‘Vaishali ki Nagarvadhu’ on Monday March 7 at Shaheed Bhawan, said Sheikh Usman creator of the drama here on Sunday while talking to the media persons.
The drama is about the story of ‘Amrapali’ the talented courtesan also known as “Ambapalika” or “Ambapali”, was nagarvadhu (royal courtesan) of the republic of Vaishali in ancient India around 500 BC. Following the Buddha’s teachings she became an arahant. The legend of Amrapali originated in the Buddhist Jataka Tales some 1500 years ago.
The role of the Ambapali is played by Sindhu Murthy who is from Bangalore. She said that it is the paradox of the character that she is attracted to and makes it a strong character. Initially being someone of desire and them picking up a life of arahant is something that only few could achieve, added Murthy.
Usman said that he read the novel on Ambapali in 2005 and since then he had been inspired by her whole persona and the Buddha’s teachings and his efforts in the uplifting of the status of women.
The musician of the group Nageen Tanveer said, “It is about contemporary theme on ladies where the atrocities on women in those days were similar to the present days, but today it just have a different form. The pain of the Amrapali that she was made the Nagarvadhu attracted me. This type of drama is being played by us for the first time”
The renowned dancer lata Munshi said that the beauty of the character is in the knowledge of the character that she is extremely talented yet she has to remain subtle in life. She contained her love for Bhimbisara and asked him to leave which adds to the charm of the character, added Munshi. The role of Bhimbisara will be played by Vinod Jaywant from Mumbai.
