A two-day Ujjain Saur Urja Mela commenced today with the objective of raising awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) and encouraging the adoption of rooftop solar energy among residents.
Inaugurating the event, Mukesh Tatwal, Mayor of Ujjain, emphasised the importance of switching to renewable energy and highlighted the benefits of the central government’s rooftop solar subsidy scheme. “The PMSGMBY subsidy makes rooftop solar affordable and easy to install. Residents of Ujjain should utilise this opportunity to reduce electricity bills while contributing to a greener environment,” he said. Ms. Kalavati Yadav, Chairperson of the Ujjain Municipal Corporation and Special Guest at the mela, echoed similar sentiments. “This mela can help fulfil Ujjain’s dream of becoming a solar energy hub,” she noted, urging citizens to make full use of the scheme's benefits.
A major attraction at the mela was the interactive stall by the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP). Visitors had the opportunity to explore their rooftop’s solar potential using the Rooftop Solar Explorer (RTSE) tool. The smart tool enabled consumers to assess rooftop suitability, estimate capacity utilisation, calculate payback periods, and understand the financial viability of adopting solar energy. The mela brought together a diverse group of consumers, industry experts, academicians, and government officials in a joint effort to promote solar energy adoption across the region.
