TI: RTI has always been under threat from State

Transparency International (TI) in a letter to the State Chief Secretary on Saturday alleged that the State Government is planning to demolish Madhya Pradesh Information Commission (MPIC), Special Police Establishment (SPE) lokayukta and Economic Offence Bureau (EOB).

TI member, noted social worker and RTI activist from the State capital, Ajay Dube in his letter to the Chief Secretary said, “The Madhya Pradesh Right To Information Act 2005 has always been subjected to step-motherly treatment by the State Government.”He further said that the main intent of this Act is to inspire the commoners to fight against corruption and provide responsible and transparent Government, but the Madhya Pradesh Government, in order to protect the corrupt officials, is out to deprave the MPIC formed under the RTI 2005 Act.

Dubey, in his letter to the Chief Secretary, raised four important requests him to consider thses issues and act honestly keeping in mind the constitutional obligation which should take legal line of action in the matter. He said that the principal secretary of the General Administration Department (GAD), K Suresh, should immediately be relieved of his current posting as the CBI has registered case in various sections of Corruption Prevention Act. His appointment at this important and sensitive department reflects the soft attitude of the State Government towards corruption. This officer has also made posting of controversial officer as the deputy secretary of the MPSIC without taking into confidence the CIC KD Khan.

However, the post of director general of SPE is lying vacant since March 1, raising doubts over the intents of Government in curbing corruption. While the post of director general of EOB is lying vacant since October 1, 2013, hence appointments on these posts should be made immediately, he added.
