I love to play with the colours,” says a poet-painter Teji Grover during the inaugural ceremony of her solo exhibition Maitri.

A solo exhibition is being put up by poetess Teji Grover at Rangdarshini Gallery, Bharat Bhavan. The exhibition begins here from Tuesday and would be on view till November 24.

A combination of rare and soothing colours over canvas spell binds the spectator. The paintings put up by Grover are not against her perceptions and clearly defines her artistic instinct, as the art lovers of the city were able to look at the colours, paints through an eye of a poet.

While talking to The Pioneer, poet-painter Teji Grover said, “Unlike writing emerges luminously from the darkness, painting is a rather celebratory way of saving myself from the pulverising impact of time.”

Elaborating further, she said, “By time I mean the time spent in waiting for poetry, for love and for death. little by little I came to realise that this joy has something to do with the nature of colours.”

As a poet, she is often asked to display her paintings.  Notably, this show at Bharat Bhavan ‘Maitri’ is her seventh and her fourth in India. She had solo shows in Jaipur, Delhi and Bangalore prior to this one. She has also shown her work during her participation in International Poetry Festivals at Visby in Sweden and at Trondheim and Ulvik in Norway.

These paintings are inspired initially by the red and the yellows of the Swedish autumn. “What a painter gets her hands, she should know. For these colours that one buys in bottles and jars are far away from what the nature gave us to play.” He paintings display the purity of nature as she used the pigments and natural colours like anar chhilka, bark of Arjun and Jamun trees, flowers from Palaash, homemade gum and many more.

Most of this work being shown at Bharat Bhavan was accomplished during her 10 years long stay in the banks of the Narmada in the township of Hoshangabad and the artist regards these paintings as a boon bestowed on her by the river. The show at Bharat Bhavan is named after her most recent collection of poetry, ‘Maitri’.

This exhibition treats the spectators with fine colours having the beauty and calmness of nature with the blend of artistic strokes over canvas.
