The screening of a Bengali movie ‘Teen Kanya’ received a huge response by the Bhopalites on Sunday. The movie was screened at Abhirang Auditorium, Bharat Bhavan under weekly film screenings organised by Chhavi wing of classical cinema.
Directed by a well renowned Bengali director Satyajit Ray, the movie is based on three short stories about the curiosities of women. A huge crowd was seen at the theatre to watch the movie.
Majorly the youngsters were present at the show and various theatre artists were also present at the film screening. The movie was screened in Bengali language with English sub-titles.
Released in the year 1961, the short stories The Postmaster, Monihara (The lost Jewels) and Samapti (The Conclusion) were adopted from the stories by Rabindranath Tagore. Noticeably, he made this movie as a tribute to Tagore to mark his birth anniversary in 1961.
The first story The Postmaster is one of the famous short stories by Tagore. The story is about Nanda, a young man who leaves Calcutta to work as a postmaster in an isolated malaria-infested village.
The postmaster is looked after by a young orphan girl, Ratan. His only solace in the village is in teaching Ratan how to read and write. A tender bond between both of them was the essence of the story.
Second story was about a woman who was obsessed with jewels. Though she is really cold towards her husband and to win her love the husband gifts her jewels every now and then. But, one day, when the husband was out of the town, she along with her jewels went missing. The unsolved mystery of the missing jewels formed the story.
The third story is about a student, Amulya, who returns to his village after finishing his exams. His widowed mother is very anxious for him to marry, and has already picked out a girl. He rejects his mother's choice and, being forced to choose some girl, marries a lively tomboy who is not ready to give up her freedom.
The movie was much enjoyed by the cine-goers at the Abhirang Auitorium.
