Successful stem cell transplant at AIIMS

Published on:

A 54 year old male patient underwent matched sibling donor stem cell transplant at AIIMS Bhopal on December 22, 2023. He was suffering from a grave blood cancer, cure of which is next to impossible in the absence of stem cell transplant.

A resident of Bhopal came to know about his disease in the month of July 2023 at other hospital. He received chemotherapy initially after which his disease came into remission. He was planned for stem cell transplant. Patient and his family were counselled in detail about the need, procedure, complications and duration of the procedure.

After their consent further work up was done. He was admitted in the month of December. Stem cell donor was his 50 year old sister. She was given growth factors for four days after which stem cells were collected from her body through apheresis machine (just like blood donation).

Apheresis was done for 2 consecutive days as required stem cell dose was not obtained on 1st day of apheresis. These collected stem cells were given (just like blood transfusion) to patient. Donated stem cells started multiplying and working in his body during 1st week of January. Patient is absolutely fine at the time of discharge. He needs to be closely followed up for next 1 year. This entire procedure was conducted using all aseptic precautions. A dedicated team comprising of doctors from Dept of Medical Oncology/Hematoloy, Dept of Transfusion Medicine, Dept of Pathology and Dept of Radiotherapy was involved in this procedure.
