Successful operation of large size tumor of jaw performed at AIIMS

Published on:

A patient was suffering from swelling in his lower jaw (mandible) for the last 6 months, which was gradually increasing during this period.

This swelling had increased to such a size that due to this 12x12 cm size tumor the patient started having difficulty in eating and even breathing. The patient consulted at many places but she did not get any benefit.

After this, the patient visited to Dr. Anshul Rai, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at  Dental Department of AIIMS, Bhopal. Dr. Rai studied the tumor by doing CT scan. Then an accurate treatment plan was made and it was decided to operate it. By performing this complex operation, Dr. Rai removed half portion of the patient's lower jaw and reconstructed the artificial jaw with a titanium plate. This operation took a total of 4 hours.

This disease named Ameloblastoma is a type of benign tumor occurring in the jaws. If not treated timely, it can start from the jaws and spread to the brain. Its only treatment is to operate the diseased jaw bone by removing it.

In the operation process, the tumor was completely exposed by making an incision in the neck and then it was cut from both the sides with the help of a saw. There are many arteries and veins in the throat which need to be saved during this procedure. Even a little carelessness during the operation can result casualty.

This is the first time that such a large-sized tumor has been operated on in AIIMS. The team that performed the operation included Dr. Anshul Rai along with Dr. Soni, Dr. Jeetendra, Farhan and Dr. Shikha from the anesthesia department. The patient is completely healthy and out of danger. Now she is living her normal life. AIIMS Executive Director Prof Dr. Ajai Singh congratulated the entire team on the success of this operation.
