The student unions in the universities and colleges of Madhya Pradesh have initiated efforts to take the students’ body polls scheduled in October, this year. last year, even the indirect polls were not organised.
The unions have again started raising their demand for direct elections for students’ body. Notably, State government had cancelled the students’ bodies election in the State last year due to time constraint despite the protests by student unions against the decision.
According to sources, along with universities’ administrations, principals of 90 per cent colleges are not in support of elections. Earlier too, college principals and professors were not in favor of elections.
The students are also not interested in college elections, due to which student unions– Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) are facing trouble in making eligible students join the unions. Both of unions are trying to make toppers join the union as in last several years elections in colleges were conducted on the basis of academic merit.
ABVP State Organisational Secretary Vishnudutt Sharma raised suspicion over the intentions of DHE. Sharma said that in the last academic session also, DHE declared elections but cancelled them at last moment.
ABVP demanded students’ body formation several times and took the matter to the court also. If DHE really wants to conduct elections then ABVP welcomes the
decision.
NSUI State President Vipin Wankhede said that by not conducting students’ body elections State Government debarred students from their rights. Direct elections should be conducted for students’ bodies. If elections are not conducted then NSUI will start aggressive movement for the rights of students.
