Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has made several recommendations to the State Government, including that females’ sterilisation operations carried out in Government hospitals should be done only in secured operation theaters (OTs).
There should not be a fear of any sort of infection and all facilities of operation should be there, and in case of any emergency, proper treatment should be made available immediately. The sterilisation operations should not be carried out in a hurry so that complications like blood seeping from the stitches after operation or hematoma should not take place.
The MPHRC made recommendations after going through the case of Rambai, who according to her husband, died of doctors’ negligence during her sterilisation operation. Her husband Jiwan Singh Ahirwar, a resident of village Kanawata Chak, Pargana Mungawali of Ashoknagar district has approached the Commission and told that his wife was operated in a camp organised at the Primary Health Commission (PHC) Sehrai.
In his complaint, Jiwan said that as the operation was done with negligence causing continuous bleeding due to that her condition deteriorated, after that she was sent for further treatment at District hospital, Ashoknagar. After five days of treatment in district hospital, her Sonography was done at a private center and one more operation was done, but her condition did not improve, despite that she was discharged.
The doctor, who performed surgery in his report to the Commission, informed that the operation was done to remove blood clot from woman’s body. The Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) informed the commission that death does not occur due to sterilisation operation, but it was caused due to some other reason. But his report made it clear that the woman was not having blood clots before the operation, which means that the complication happened to her after the operation.
The Commission also called for report from the SP Ashoknagar in the case, who told that the woman died of negligence of his husband. The commission analysing the case observed that women face problems during operations in camps hence, the operations carried out in Government hospitals should be done only in secured operation theaters.
