A special one-day session of Madhya Pradesh Assembly will be held on August 24 for ratification of the Constitution Amendment Bill on GST.

The Assembly will convene on August 24 to consider the Constitution (122nd Amendment) (Goods and Services Tax) Bill, an official said.

Principal Secretary of  Assembly AP Singh said, “the legislature will meet to consider the GST Bill on August 24 in continuation of the monsoon session last month with no other business since the assembly has not yet been prorogued.

The bill has been passed by the two chambers of Parliament and now needs to be passed by at least 15 of the 29 State assemblies to become law.

Madhya Pradesh, that has been pioneer in taking initiatives on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream projects, will be the fourth state after Assam, Bihar and Gujarat, to call a special session of the legislative Assembly for GST.

The special one-day session will be a part of the Monsoon Session which ended on a stormy note with the opposition Congress stalling proceedings on the last day demanding a debate on massive corruption in Ujjain Simhastha-2016.

The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Second Amendment) Bill, 2014 on GST has already been passed by the lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha last week. The GST Bill, seen as single biggest tax reform in a long time, needs to be ratified by at least 15 state legislatures before the President can notify the GST Council which will decide the new tax rate.
