Unfolding the political and social scenario of a nation, a satirical play ‘Andhon ka Haathi’ was staged at Shaheed Bhavan auditorium.
Directed by a renowned playwright of the city Sanjay Mehta, the play is a satirical story written by best known satirist Sharad Joshi. The play was performed on Monday by the artists of Madhu Institute of Film and Technology (MIFT), Bhopal.
Based on the famous wisdom tale ‘The elephant of the blinds’ the play is a hard-hitting satire on politicians approach in handling the affairs of the country.
The multifaceted plot of the play revolves around five blind people and an elephant. Introducing the Sutradhar i.e. the narrator of the play, the lights went on stage. The narrator brings the elephant before the blind people and requests them to recognize what it is. He then tells them to speak their interpretations about it.
Interestingly, each character on stage was a symbol connected to society. The narrator was symbolic to anxious common man of the nation, while the blind people represented the political leaders, their warped governance and their vague attitude towards issues. On the other hand, the elephant was a metaphor for the unresolved and unrecognised issues of the country.
As the narrator asks blind people to speak their perceptions, what ensues after it tells the entire story. Very intellectually, with comical dialogues, the director Sanjay Mehta was able to express his viewpoint to the theatre buffs of the city.
The play was worthwhile watching with the intense dialogues and at the same time ensuing laughter.
