Additional Sessions Judge RP Mishra sentenced on Monday a wholesale grocery dealer to six month’s imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 1000 in a case related to sale of adulterated salt in 1994.
According to the prosecution, Food Inspector ID Chawla had collected a sample of ‘Maruti’ brand salt on February 22 in 1994 from Patel Kirana Store at Ahmedpur. The sample was later found to be of dubious quality.
Subsequently, a case was registered against the retailer Ramesh Kumar as well as the wholesaler Nand Kishore of laxmi Traders in the court of First Class Judicial Magistrate. The court found both as guilty and sentenced them for six month’s imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1000 on them. The two had appealed in the court of Additional Sessions Judge against the judgment. The court discharged the retailer Ramesh Kumar as he presented the receipts showing that he had bought the dubious quality salt from the wholesaler laxmi Traders. The court held this as a proof that he had committed a bona fide mistake.
However, the wholesaler laxmi Traders could not present any bill supporting its contention that it had bought the product from Ahmadabad based firm. Further, the address of the manufacturer was also not mentioned on the pack. Considering this as sufficient proof of guilt, the judge sentenced laxmi Traders proprietor Nand Kishore.
