The two-day ‘Shehnai Recital’ programme of the SPIC MACAY Bhopal Fest 2013, was concluded on Tuesday at World Way International School here.

The concluding day of the event was received with huge response from as many as 400 students, staff and invitees. As the artists began playing, the youngsters also enjoyed the rare fusion played through shehnai.

Organised by Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among Youngsters (SPIC MACAY) the programme was staged by renowned Shehnai players Sanjeev Shankar and Ashwani Shankar in the musical company of a noted Tabla maestro Anand Shankar.

According to the Shankar Brothers, the inclusion of fusion in shehnai with the blend of classical and folk instrumental music could increase the interest of the youngsters in shehnai recital. Notably, the Shankar Brothers are working on bringing up new fusions in clarinet music and are also working on bringing new innovations in fusion compositions.

The programme began with ‘Saraswati Vandana’ performed by the students of World Way International School. After the Saraswati Vandana the Shankar Brothers began playing with Raga Megh. This raga is basically played during night and is associated with the monsoon season, but to make the students aware of the raga during this season, Shankar Brothers played it beautifully.

After Raga Megh, they played Raga Bhairavi in Barah Sur (12 rhythms) leaving the audiences mesmerised. Both the ragas were played for a duration of 30 minutes. On the concluding day, the artists interacted with students and shared basic information about shehnai.

The involvement of youngsters among the audiences was heartwarming. It was a real treat for the classical music lovers who were present at the venue to witness the young classical players performing live. While talking to The Pioneer, Regional Secretary of SPIC MACAY Ahish Joshi said, “After at least 10 years a clarinet recital is being organised in the city. Notably, before the Shankar Brothers, Ustad Bimillah Khan gave the performance in the city of lakes.”The programme was volunteered by Devajan Mishra, Amol Jain and Kapil Sharma.
