A surprise check carried out by an inspection team from Rajasthan busted a well-organised sex determination and illegal abortion racket in the city and two brokers- Manmohan and Jeetendra Yadav - were arrested. The court has remanded the two culprits with judicial custody and sent them to the jail till the June 19. The arrests of the duo were made following a surprise check by the team in one of the ultra-sound centers in the city.
According to sources, in the police department, the police will be seeking their custody after the judicial custody ends on the 19th so as to get details about the modus operandi of the gang and their associates in the city.
The detection of the alleged sex determination racket has put a spotlight on how the city could be turning into a destination for those looking to surreptitiously carry out gender test of the unborn child in violation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act.
According to the Inspection and Monitoring Committee team, the names of many doctors have come up while going through the mobile call details data of the arrested brokers. The team said that the likelihood of some doctors, diagnostic centers and hospitals from the city being associated with the illegal abortion and female foeticide could not be ruled out. They added that the number of such suspected doctors is huge and a detailed and comprehensive investigation could take some time. The police is seeking the names of such doctors to investigate the matter further.
The District Consultant Committee of the PCPNDT (Pre- Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) is also suspicious of the role of many Health Department officials in the racket and fears their involvement.
According to sources in the committee they have already apprised the District Administration and the police about their fears.
