Severe weather claims farmer’s life, eight injured in MP

Harsh weather conditions continued to batter Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a farmer and injuries to eight others across multiple districts. The Meteorological Department has issued alerts for strong storms and heavy rains in 40 districts, including major cities such as Bhopal, Indore, and Gwalior, warning that these severe conditions are expected to persist for several days.

In a tragic incident in Chateh village of Rewa district, farmer Gopikrishna Mishra died after coming into contact with an 11 KV electric wire while taking his buffaloes out for grazing. The accident also claimed the lives of two of his buffaloes, and several trees and electric poles were reported to have fallen due to the storms and heavy rain.

Bhopal witnessed thunder, lightning, dense cloud cover, and light rainfall on Tuesday, while the daytime temperature remained uncomfortably high at 39 degrees Celsius. The weather created a mix of discomfort and disruption for residents.

The Meteorological Department’s alert covers 40 districts including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Tikamgarh, Rewa, Sidhi, Singrauli, Panna, Damoh, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, Chhindwara, Sagar, Raisen, Betul, Harda, Sehore, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Khargone, Barwani, Dhar, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Neemuch, and several others. The department has warned that storms with wind speeds between 30 to 50 kilometers per hour may occur, accompanied by heavy rainfall in some areas and light showers in others.

Besides the fatal incident in Rewa, lightning strikes injured three people in Kukshi, Dhar district, and four others in Khandwa district. In Khandwa’s Khalwa and Piplod areas, a student’s condition worsened critically following a lightning strike, prompting her transfer to Indore for advanced medical care.

Senior Meteorologist from the department explained that the state is currently experiencing the effects of cyclonic circulation and trough activity passing through the central region. These weather systems are responsible for the renewed period of storms and rainfall, and their impact is expected to continue over the next several days.

Earlier, a heatwave alert was issued for the Gwalior-Chambal region, but recent atmospheric changes have increased the likelihood of rainfall, providing some relief from the extreme heat. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, stay updated with weather advisories, and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents and injuries caused by storms and lightning.

Officials have also urged local administrations to prepare for possible flooding and infrastructural damage in vulnerable areas. Efforts to clear fallen trees and restore power outages caused by the storms are underway.

With the monsoon season approaching, meteorologists predict that Madhya Pradesh will continue to experience fluctuating weather patterns marked by alternating heat waves and stormy conditions. Residents are advised to monitor forecasts regularly and stay vigilant.

Authorities have urged residents, especially farmers and those working outdoors, to exercise heightened caution during this volatile weather period. Power departments have been instructed to strengthen maintenance and rapid response teams to quickly address any electrical hazards caused by fallen wires or poles. Health officials also advise people to stay hydrated and avoid exposure during peak heat hours while taking precautions against lightning strikes during storms. Local administrations are coordinating with disaster management teams to ensure timely assistance and to mitigate any adverse impacts on communities.
